A project for Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen.

Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, Ruhrfestspiele 2021 mostly happened in digital space. To provide for some offline excitement in the festival’s home of Recklinghausen, the artistic director Olaf Kröck commissioned us with the flagging of the city center.

We designed over 500 different flags. The design principle made use of three discreet aspects: 1) the almost circular layout of the historic city center, 2) Johannes Itten's classic color wheel, and 3) the Festival's own corporate design. The result being a complex visual system that could be applied throughout the city.

People walking through the city, experienced a stroll through a color wheel. To create the most interesting combinations, each street picked up some of the colors of the neighboring streets. This concept became the exciting face of Ruhrfestspiele 2021 for many weeks.
